Student Artist Spotlight: Yuki Enoma ’22

“In my head, I’ll see pictures or colors while listening to a song, and then I kind of just pull in whatever’s been catching my eye lately and draw something inspired by both things.”

Yuki Enoma is a junior and a visual artist at Miss Hall’s who works in a digital medium. We asked her few questions to learn more about her work and her process.

Could you tell us a little bit about the process that went into each piece, and how it is meaningful to you?

When I’m about to draw something, I have a couple of ideas just floating around in my head, and then I write them down, but it’s never a concrete plan for what I’m going to draw. I kind of just draw one or two things and go from there, I don’t actually have a complete idea of what my pieces will look like finished. It helps because I don’t have to worry about why it isn’t looking the way I would want it to, and I can just change it into something else instead of scrapping it entirely. Sometimes I’m just playing around until it looks good.

What were some challenges you encountered in creating these pieces, and how were they overcome?

I usually challenge myself in some way before I start any of my pieces since I’ll have these big ideas of what I could do and then when I actually try to execute it, it’s more difficult than I expected… But the desire to draw what I wanted to motivates me, and I just push through and finally breathe at the end of it. I would get challenged trying to figure out how to draw some backgrounds correctly, or when dealing with lighting and perspectives. It’s tough, but if you keep messing around for like thirty minutes you eventually realize what you need to do.

What inspires you and why?

For my more recent pieces, I’ve been inspired by vintage magazine ads and older movie posters. I’ve also been inspired by some foreign films lately as well. Usually, my pieces are all influenced by whatever music I am listening to.  In my head, I’ll see pictures or colors while listening to a song, and then I kind of just pull in whatever’s been catching my eye lately and draw something inspired by both things.
