The Psychological and Sociological Effects of Disney Princesses on Children

“I’ve struggled with body image all my life, and I can trace this back to the Disney princesses, where their waists are literally the size of their necks.”

For their final project in Women’s Health and Global Issues, Nya Mielke ’21 and Sarah Briggs ’21 made a video discussing the psychological and sociological effects of Disney princesses on young children. Both Nya and Sarah grew up watching Disney movies and believe they had both positive and negative effects on their lives.

“The Disney princesses inspired me. They taught me that I can do anything, to never give up, and that love is a very powerful thing,” Nya says. “…[but] the lack of diversity in body figures and cultures is a problem in the Disney Princess brand.”

“While the company has been a positive in my life, it has also had some negative effects on me,” Sarah says. “I’ve struggled with body image all my life, and I can trace this back to the Disney princesses, where their waists are literally the size of their necks.”
